How to pin boutonnieres (and other wearable flowers)!

Wearable flowers, such as boutonnieres, flower crowns or rings, and corsages, are delightful accessories that elevate any formal occasion. Whether it’s a wedding, prom, or special event, these small floral arrangements add a touch of elegance, charm, and fun to your attire. However, properly pinning or attaching a floral wearable requires some finesse to ensure it stays secure throughout the event.

Before you begin pinning, make sure you have the necessary tools: the corsage pins we include in every order. You don’t need to worry about floral tape or wire because we’ve already handled that in the creation of your wearable! Also, each Plumeria boutonniere will come with approximately two to three inches of “floral tail” for easier handling.

Before you pin on your boutonniere you’ll want to identify the ideal position on your lapel. Traditionally, boutonnieres are worn on the left lapel, just above the heart. Experiment with different angles and placements to find the most flattering position. Once you’ve decided where it’s going to go, follow the steps below:

  • Hold the boutonniere in place on the desired spot on your attire.
  • Take a corsage pin and pierce it through the fabric from the underside.
  • Carefully insert the pin through the stem of the boutonniere, ensuring it’s securely fastened.
  • Angle the pin slightly upward to prevent the boutonniere from drooping.
  • Lastly, push the tip of the pin back into the lapel fabric to cover the point.
  • If needed, use additional pins to reinforce the stability of the boutonniere.

After pinning the boutonniere, gently tug on it to ensure it’s securely attached. The boutonniere should remain in place even with movement and throughout the duration of the event. If it feels loose or wobbly, remove and reposition the pins, or use additional pins for added support.

If you aren’t sure about the pinning process, we can also create a boutonniere using magnets. Please let us know if that’s what you’d prefer when ordering.

If you’ve ordered a flower crown, it will either come on a headband or with ties. Please make sure to discuss your needs when ordering.

Flower rings come ready to pop on and go!

Just a thought: consider wearing your corsage around your ankle (especially if you have a really fun shoe that you want to show off)! Although corsages are traditionally worn around the wrist- there are no rules! It’s your event and corsage so have fun with it!
