Money Tree Care Guide

The Money Tree, also known as Pachira aquatica, is a popular indoor houseplant native to Central and South America. It’s known for its braided trunk, bright green leaves, and reputation for bringing good luck and prosperity to its owners. The Money Tree is an easy houseplant to care for and can grow to be quite tall, making it a great option for those looking for a low-maintenance, high-light plant.

5 tips on Money Tree Care (especially #1)

Money Tree plants are low-maintenance but do require specific care. So, as you get to know your plant, make sure to follow these five tips for the best outcome.

Not too Wet

The Money Tree likes to be kept evenly moist but not overly wet. It's important to not let the soil dry out completely, as this can cause the leaves to wilt and drop. However, overwatering can also be harmful to the plant and can lead to root rot. Simply wait until the top inch of soil is dry to the touch and then water thoroughly, allowing any excess water to drain away.

Bright and Indirect

This plant needs plenty of bright, indirect light to thrive. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can burn the leaves. If you're keeping your plant indoors, place it near a south-facing window so it gets plenty of sun throughout the day. If you don't have a south-facing window, a west or east-facing window also works. If however, your plant is outdoors, keep it in a spot that gets plenty of sun but is sheltered from strong winds.

Low Humidity

Money trees like low humidity and can tolerate dry air. In fact, high humidity can actually be harmful to the plant and can lead to leaf drop. If you live in a humid environment, make sure to place your Money Tree in a well-ventilated area.

Nice and Warm

As for temperature, the Money Tree prefers warm temperatures between 65-85°F so keep it away from any cold drafts or hot air vents

How to Propagate

If your Money Tree has become too large for your space or if you are looking to share it, propagation is easy! To do so, take a cutting from the plant's stem and place it in well-draining soil. Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist and provide bright, indirect light until the cutting has established roots. If it is a gift, consider purchasing one of our lovely gray marble clay pots. In addition to these, we carry a large variety of other types and sizes. However, sizes and styles vary due to availability so give us a call or stop in!

Did you know?

The Money Tree is often used in feng shui to bring good luck and prosperity to its owners and this is why it’s often sold with a red ribbon tied around its trunk- the ribbon is said to activate the plant’s powers of prosperity and good luck!

Also, the braided trunk is not a natural occurrence, but rather a result of careful training and manipulation by growers. Fascinating!
